INTRODUCTION DART - Disability Awareness Resource Team – has carried out well over 100 Disability Awareness sessions during the last few years with a variety of groups from Health and Social Services staff and professionals , voluntary and church groups as well as to countless schoolchildren and their teachers. The Disability Awareness Resource Team (DART) The team is made up of people with a variety of impairments and life experiences; some from professional backgrounds who have acquired their ‘disability’ in later life ,and some who have been users of services for much longer and are voicing their experiences for the first time. It is this mixture of experiences and perspectives which is the most valuable element of the training. That is, it provides a structured and constructive forum to hear what using our services feels like for disabled people as well as the opportunity to ask questions and to work through problem-solving strategies to improve services in the future. Content Legislative and Policy background – particularly the implications of the Disability Discrimination Act 1995. Look at the physical barriers to health and other care experienced by disabled people. Attitudinal barriers and how they impact on service quality. Using the DART 'Card Game' ; an opportunity to interactively hear people’s experiences from different perspectives. ‘Hands on’. An in-depth look at the experiences of wheelchair users Question and Answer. The chance for you or DART to ask questions and share experiences. (We need to know what your difficulties are as well!) (There will be numerous handouts on the day , supporting documents and a certificate of attendance after the event for personal development files etc.) |
